It is also
home to a large number of small Catholic institutions, mostly in the Brookland
neighborhood, including The Catholic University of America, St. Anselm's
Abbey School, Trinity University, the Franciscan Monastery, Whitefriars
Hall, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception,
the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, and the headquarters of the United
States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Two large
public gardens are located below the waistline of the Anacostia River
in Northeast: the United States National Arboretum and Kenilworth Aquatic
Gardens. Other important sites in the quadrant include the ruins of several
Civil War-era forts and Gallaudet University.
It is accessible
via the Orange, Red, Yellow, and Green Lines of the Washington Metro.
Union Station is served by the MARC and Virginia Railway Express commuter
rail systems, as well as by Amtrak. The Greyhound Bus Terminal is located
in this quadrant and is served by Greyhound, Peter Pan, Trailways, and
other bus companies.
Capitol Hill
Capitol Hill is mostly
well known for being the United States Capitol, Senate and House office
buildings, the Supreme Court, Library of Congress, U.S. Marine Barracks,
Washington Navy Yard and the Congressional Cemetery.
The little known fact
is that, Capitol Hill is also... very largely made out of residential
neighborhoods with many a rowhouses differentiating in styles and eras
of architecture, which makes this area of DC a veritable gold mine in
real estate. Side by side exist early 19th century manor houses, Federal
townhouses, small frame dwellings, ornate Italianate bracketed houses
and the late 19th century press brick rowhouses with their often whimsical
decorative elements combining Richardsonian Romanesque, Queen Anne, and
Eastlakian motifs.
The main non-residential
corridor of Capitol Hill is Pennsylvania Avenue, a lively commercial street
with shops, restaurants and bars. Eastern Market is an 1873 public market
on 7th Street SE, where vendors sell fresh meat and produce in indoor
stalls and at outdoor farmers' stands. It is a community anchor for nearby
stores and restaurants. It is also the site of an outdoor flea market
every weekend. After a major fire gutted the main market building on April
30, 2007, restoration of the building began. It is expected to be completed
in early 2009. Merchants have been temporarily relocated to a structure
across the street.
Barracks Row (8th
Street SE), so called because of its proximity to the U.S. Marine Barracks,
is one of the city's oldest commercial corridors. It dates to the late
18th century and has recently been revitalized. Recent estimates in Capitol
Hill newspapers suggest as many as a third of all Members of Congress
live on Capitol Hill while in Washington.
Brookland
Another large
neighborhood in Northeast DC is Brookland. Brookland is bounded by 9th
Street NE to the west, Rhode Island Avenue NE to the south, and South
Dakota Avenue to the east. Michigan Avenue is the northern boundary between
9th and 14th Streets; however, Brookland also includes the Mount St. Sepulchre
Franciscan Monastery, which gives the neighborhood a northward panhandle
between 14th and South Dakota that extends to Taylor Street. Brookland
is served by the Brookland-CUA station on the Red Line of the Washington
Metro.
